9 Week - Profile Shot

9 Weeks

According to http://www.babycenter.com/ the baby is the size of a grape this week. In honor of Halloween I thought "Grape-Man" would be an appropriate image!

New with the baby:
The baby's heart is finishing dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form -- as do tiny teeth. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. Your baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. Murphy will be so sad to hear that the tail is gone!

Weight gain:
I think I am holding steady - but ooooh the bloating. The jeans are VERY snug.

What I am craving:
Hmmm nothing so much this week. Just food - and lots of it. Chocolate has started to come back into my life. I really wasn't caring for it - would rather have more tart sweets.

How I am feeling:
Mostly good - but I have my moments. Tired, headachy, tired, hungry, weepy, tired...

Running & Exercise:

Let's see, since last Wednesday...
Thursday: slept in - soooo tired
Friday: Ran six miles with the girls
Saturday: Ran 11 miles - oooh it was too hot! It was in the 70s when we started the run and very humid. I had the realization that I am going to be the mom here and that I already have to start being responsible. I knew I could keep up with my friends but I didn't know if I SHOULD be keeping up with them. So I trailed behind and walked a bit here and there.
Sunday: Walked an hour with my friend Tricia from Dayton who was in town for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. What a cool event!
Monday: didn't have time to swim so I went in and lifted for 40 minutes and then did the elliptical for 20
Tuesday: ran 6 miles with my friends - tried out my friend Brooke's heart rate monitor. Very interesting contraption. I am going to set a goal of keeping the heart rate around 150bpm. I feel at that rate I can still keep a conversation going which seems to be the new guideline for running while pregnant.
Wednesday: slept in - soooo tired

I am still feeling a bit guilty when skipping a workout - especially since I have been eating so abundantly lately. But I can tell the guilt levels are becoming less and less...

Great moment this week:
I think its how excited Rick is for this baby. You know I really thought he would be like this. He loves his nieces and nephews so much and loves being with them. However he would always say things like - oooh we can't have a baby - so I guess I really didn't know! Now, I think at times he is more excited than me! It really makes me happy to have such an eager partner in this crazy thing called parenthood.

Week 8

Oooh two whole months! I feel like this is an exciting milestone...my first month since knowing that I was pregnant. According to alphamom.com, the baby is as big as a gummy bear - love their cute illustration:

New with the baby:
"Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from the baby's hands and feet, and he is growing eyelids and lungs. Too cool.

Weight gain:
yes - but I did celebrate my birthday this past weekend!

What I'm craving:
nothing really - the salt crazies have subsided but Chic-fil-a still is like a siren's song to me. Most of the time I say no to the awesomely tasty waffle fries and just get me a Chic-Fil-A sandwich...but not all of the time.

How I'm feeling:
geez right this second I am feeling pretty darn good. Ask me in a bit and I'm sure I'll say cruddy. 9ish in the morning, then mid afternoon and evening I just feel yucky. I've been getting some headaches and now carry Regular Strength Tylenol around with me. The thought of potentially having four more weeks of feeling like this is a bit daunting. People say I'll look back "fondly" on this time :) I've also been very tired. I am going to bed at 9pm, sometimes 8pm.

Running & Exercise:
I've not been very good this week. This is a new thing to me - resting when the body doesn't feel at its best! I've decided I am going to have a schedule somewhat like this for the next couple of months until the half marathon...
Monday - swim & lift
Tuesday - run 6 miles
Wednesday - run 4 miles
Thursday - swim & lift
Friday - run 6 miles
Saturday - long run 10-12 miles
Sunday - rest/take Murphy for a walk or try to get in a bike ride!

I missed Tuesday and Thursday mornings this week. I am going to try to go after work today...though I hate the after work YMCA. Sooooo busy! I have definitely slowed down but I really enjoy getting out and moving. I promise I am taking it easy!

Great moment this week:
not related to the baby, but Murphy has been given a green light to run and play at his eight week checkup after his ACL surgery in August. We did a very easy walk/run this week...he was excited.

My 30th Birthday

My 30th Birthday was awesome...a bit different than what I thought it might before I found out I was pregnant but still very awesome. Friday night, Rick and I went to dinner with Fred & Donna to Bonterra which was so delicious! I got to watch them drink some delicious wine - well maybe I snuck a sip or two. I was asleep by 9:00pm at the latest! Crazy 30 year old!

Saturday morning, I ran after my friends for 10 miles. It went pretty well. I am making sure to hydrate fully and keep it at a pace that is comfortable for me. At noon, my friends Tara, Brooke and April surprised me by picking me up and taking me to complete a couple of items on a 30 B4 30 list I had. We went to eat at Price's Chicken Coop and rode on the real trolley. I had yet to do either and it was fun times sharing the experiences with these girls.

Theennnnn...at 5:30pm, Tara & Jimmy, Brooke & Brian and April (Jason was there in spirit) showed up in a limo outside my door and picked up Rick and I along with sis/bro in-law Mary and Andy. We went to Nikko for sushi and had an awesome time. I was trying to be good about what choices I made for the sushi. I don't think I will be eating sushi much at all again over the next 9 months so this was a real treat.
We then got dropped off at the Old Mecklenburg Brewery for their Mecktoberfest! There I was surprised by about 15 more friends. I splurged with one beer and made that sucker last for a loong time. It was chilly outside under the tent but the tasty beer and dancing helped a bit. Inside was nice and toasty and made for good conversations. It was a great time.

So as one of the preggos in the group, the birthday girl was a designated driver. My friends thanked me for driving home..."oh my pleasure" :)
I celebrated in a little different way than I previously thought I would but it was so very fun.

Week 7

On Wednesday the 14th I officially was 7 weeks along. According to the babycenter.com website, the baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long - or as big as a blueberry!

Some changes in the baby include that hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs. Technically, the baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of the tailbone.

How I'm feeling:
Mostly okay...though I feel at periods throughout the day like I have a big ol' hangover. The stomach is a little queasy and I have a headache and there can be some food aversions. Eating something does usually help a lot of these feelings go away which I find weird.

What I'm craving:
SALT!!! Boy I am loving me some salty foods and to tell you the truth, they are about the only thing calling to me right now. I am going to have to get this under control sometime soon but right now Cheez-its and french fries taste sooooooo good.

Running & Exercise:
Before I found out I was pregnant, I was training for the Kiawah Marathon on December 12th. My running was actually giving me one sign that something was different. I couldn't keep up with the group anymore and my runs were really suffering. I talked about my running with the doctor I saw on the 7th and she actually okayed the marathon. She said I would have to be really careful and hydrate and just listen to my body...I am going to do all that but at the half marathon distance instead. I have definitely slowed down - not necessarily by choice. I have also reduced the number of running days per week from 5 to 4 and have added swimming/lifting days. I am listening to what my body is telling me!

Missing stuff:
I do miss having a beer or wine - but its more the idea of it. Think of ways to celebrate your birthday with no drinking is hard - well it is when its just something you've always done. But overall my stomach is so wacky - I don't miss the actual stuff right yet. It is definitely more the idea of it...and feeling left out in some way. I am still trying to figure out what I can and can't eat - but still I only want certain things so I don't feel real deprived in that area either. Caffeine has been an easy one to give up - but I really didn't drink that much to begin with.

Our first ultrasound

Wednesday, October 7th

Our first ultrasound was to help us figure out how far I might be along since my crazy cycles didn't lend itself to accurate information. It is amazing how much detail you can see on those ultrasounds. The woman who worked the machine was a wiz. You could tell she had done this a few times before.

We could see the little embryo growing inside of me and she measured it as 4mm long! That's like a grain of rice! We saw its little heart beating and could even hear it over the speakers they had in the room. Just amazing. With the measurements and development stage, she calculated that I was six weeks along which would give me a due date of June 2, 2010. Check out the picture of our "blob" here...and the heart beat measurements.

It seems so long away! I know everybody will say it will be here before you know it...but I am having a hard time believing that right now. Hearing the heartbeat is a great sign but I am still being realistic that there is still a good chance that this baby could not stick around. I am having a hard time keeping Rick quiet. He is so excited and just wants to tell everyone. We are going to wait until mid-November/Thanksgiving time to tell everyone. Which is when I will make this blog public. But I wanted to make sure that I remember all the "joys" that I am going through these early days.

Finding Out

Well to tell you the truth - we were a bit surprised. I had gotten off of birth control earlier in the year and had been having some issues with regulating myself without the hormones. To put it concisely - I was a wreck for about six months. Poor Rick. I had a couple of blood tests done with the doctor in early August and September that told me I had low progesterone which is a sign that I had not been ovulating. So I thought there was no way I could be pregnant any time soon. So the early pregnancy symptoms I was experiencing, I just chalked up to stress from school and work. But on September 30th I told Rick that I wanted to take a pregnancy test to just clear that off the list. I "knew" I wasn't pregnant, but just to make sure...

So on our way home from a long work day for me - our annual Birdies for the Brave golf tournament fundraiser, we stopped at the grocery store for a pack of tests. I took that test when I got home and there was a faaaaaint line! Holy smokes! Rick thought it wasn't positive because that line wasn't as dark as the tester line. We really didn't think it was possible! So the next morning I took another and there was that faint line again. Could you be kind of pregnant? haha. I already had a OB/GYN appointment set up for the 12th of October to talk about getting on Clomid but I called that morning and moved it up to Friday the 2nd.

When we showed up at the office, the doctor still thought we were going to talk about Clomid. But I told him the story and about the positive pregnancy tests. Rick busted in at this moment and asked-"but were they really positive"? Thanks honey! So the doctor said...well, let's do another test. They ran the test and he said that it came back immediately positive...holy cow! He admitted to us that he was wondering why those tests could have come back with a false positive. It weren't no false positive! He said congratulations and sent me for some bloodwork. Rick and I were in a daze. We weren't sure what we had really heard.

That was a long weekend waiting to hear about the test results. They finally called on Monday at 4:30pm - talk about agony! My HCG levels were already at 17,000 which meant that I could have been as much as eight weeks along! We were so excited about this news. Since we were potentially so far along, they scheduled us for another appointment that same week. That will be the next post.
