22 Weeks - The Scale Lies

New with Baby:
Supposedly BabyGirl is now weighing in at about one pound and is closing in on that one foot mark! BabyCenter.com said she should be the size of a spaghetti squash! Now this is a vegetable comparison that I can wrap my mind around. Last week's carrot comparison didn't jive in my head.

New with Me:
I went to the doctor on Monday for my monthly check-up and the biggest news was that I have gained a lot of weight. According to them I've gained about 20lbs. I had originally lost weight and so this is not from pre-pregnancy weight. But you know I have always had a hate-hate relationship with the scales at the doctor's office. You're wearing all these heavy clothes and are coming in at different times of the day....things are going to be off! According to my scale at home I am at about a 14lb weight gain. Much more manageable to my sensibilities. I have to admit that when I was talking to the doctor about my weight gain I was on the verge of tears. I am somewhat concerned with being a big ol' fatty - haha. I have promised myself that I will be more responsible when it comes to eating...I got in a bad habit at the beginning of the pregnancy to eat whatever I want and I wasn't gaining weight. Well that game has run its course. I did some emotional eating last week and I promise myself I won't eat that bad again...close but not that bad.

Movement:
BabyGirl has to be moving some furniture around in there at times. I swear she is so active sometimes I can hardly believe it. Yesterday morning before I went out for my run, I got back into bed as I snoozed my alarm. As I was hugging up against Rick, he could feel BabyGirl doing karate chops at his lower back. I love laying in bed and feeling her move. Its one of the coolest things ever.

Running & Exercise:
Thursday: BodyPump and 20 minutes on the elliptical
Friday: Ran around the neighborhood for 30 minutes - not so great - followed a dinner of pizza and ice cream. this could have had something to do with it.
Saturday: Horrible, horrible run - I was uncomfortable at first and when that went away I had to pee so bad...I had to stop at the Starbucks to use the restroom before I got home. Grumpy girl.
Sunday: nothing
Monday: BodyPump and 20 minutes of swimming
Tuesday: Run 4 miles with Murphy - this went much MUCH better...mind over matter!
Wednesday: You couldn't have paid me enough to get out of bed to work out this morning (aka - dramatic way of saying I did nothing)

Miscellaneous:

  • I have been so busy this week with orders for my stationery business! Its been great and I really appreciate the business. I am trying to balance work and school and sleep and this side business. I wish work didn't get in the way so much! haha
  • I've been enjoying my internship. They have been keeping me busy this week. I really do enjoy that type of work. I don't know what my work situation will be PB (post-baby) but I sure hope that I will be able to have a design career in any way shape or form.
  • My sis-in-law, Mary, just sent a few more maternity clothes home with my parents-in-law and in the bag there were two Bella Bands - hooray! For those not in the know, a Bella Band will help keep pants that won't button from falling down. They act as a litle compression device and keeps those pants in place! I am wearing one now for the first time and I am pleasantly surprised at how it does masks the fact that you have an "open fly" and how well it works at keeping things right where they should be. Love them!

Nursery Update:

I think I have picked out a crib! (I think) This has been a very hard decision to make. Really I just want a crib that won't maim my daughter in any way shape or form. Oh and it should be white. Safe and white...is that so hard? Well there are a million options that fall into those two categories. What are the differences? Sometimes I can't tell.

Friends recommended the Baby Bargains book to help make baby gear decisions and - phew - what a LOT of information that book has! It both helped and also gave me wayyy too much to think about. It goes through every brand (be it a stroller or a crib or a diaper pail even!) and gives reviews and assigns them a letter grade. There's no way my baby is going in a crib that got a C!!

So after going through that book and researching online I decided on a DaVinci crib from Babies R' Us. It was nice looking, it was white, it got good reviews from the book and online. Sold...but then doing some MORE research I found this crib made by BabyMod on Walmart.com of all places!:




Hmmmm this looks like the same thing! Well as Baby Bargains points out - BabyMod and DaVinci are both made by a company called Million Dollar Baby. I compared all of the facts and found that there is NO difference in these two cribs except for the price tag - the BabyMod one is $100 less! It also topped about.com's list of Best Cribs under $250. To add to the list of the benefits of this crib, it is also not as wide as some other cribs. We only have so much space to put the crib in and this crib is about 4-5" narrower than others. Another hooray.

The only thing I am not crazy crazy about is that you can see those black marks where the hardware is showing. I think I will get over it though.

Questions for experienced parents...should I buy the toddler bed conversion kit? We are keeping the queen bed BabyGirl's room and some day it will be her bed so could I move her from the crib right to the queen bed? Or should I keep her in the crib turned toddler bed? Will I be mad later that I don't have the conversion kit?

Week 21 - Growing Pains

New with the Baby:
BabyGirl should now weigh about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long, or as BabyCenter.com says - the length of a carrot. Why use such a skinny vegetable to make a comparison? The boxing routine that we saw on the ultrasound a few weeks ago has now been undeniably felt by me. I think it started last Thursday - I guess right after I finished my last blog entry. Up until then the movements were so faint that I wasn't sure what I was feeling. Now I definitely know. I can feel her knocking around in there when I am sitting down - so when I am at work and at school. Its pretty neat to be listening to my teacher talk and feel BabyGirl's movements.

New with Me:
Not much - I feel like I have gotten MUCH bigger. There have been a lot of the growing pains (or round ligament pains as they call it) lately. I went for a run on Tuesday and thought I didn't need to wear my super duper support belt and boy was I wrong! The pain from that mingled with some discomfort I have been feeling in my upper right thigh stopped the run at one minute long. So that belt is now going to be a mandatory part of my running attire. I've also been worrying that I am eating too much lately. I love my snacks...and I love carbo filled snacks. I bought a huge bag of animal crackers from the store the other day and I love just gnoshing on those. I'm afraid all of these carbs will grow a big baby (and a big mommy) !! I guess I'll ask again on Monday at my doctor's appointment. See if I am on a good weight gain track.

Thursday: BodyPump class and 20 minutes on the elliptical
Friday: Run 4 miles with Brooke, April and Murphy - went well!
Saturday: Run 5 miles with Colleen, April, Meredith, Tara and Murphy - it was so fun to have a big group to run with again! Tara has joined us for the first time postpartum and did awesome. I am very impressed with her come-backedness. Also, this was a faster run than I have done in awhile. I felt pretty good while doing it but I was sure ready to be done. I think I tweaked my right thigh muscle on this run....boooo...
Sunday: Nuttin
Monday: BodyPump class and walk with Murphy for 25 minutes
Tuesday: Failed attempt at a run so Murph and I ran for 1 minute and walked for 29 minutes.
Wednesday: Swam for 30 minutes (I think I am 1-2 weeks away from being indecent in my bathing suit...the belly is pulling the swimsuit down and showing more and more of my upper half!) Then I rode the bike for 20 minutes

Hooray Moments This Week:
1) Definitely feeling BabyGirl move - its so fun to have her constant little presence in my life.
2) We're getting the nursery done more and more...we painted the furniture this weekend and I put the new quilt on the queen sized bed in there. I also bought crib bedding off of craigslist! I love it! I cannot wait to get a crib so I can get it all set up. Next to do is customizing some curtains with some ribbon, getting them hung up and then I will feel like I can leave the room alone for awhile. There are plenty of other projects in the house to be done.
3) Learning that my brother and his wife are expecting again! Baby Cuzzin will be born sometime in mid-July! Hooray!
4) Had dinner with some neighbor friends on Friday night. Rob and Julie brought little Kate over (born in September) and Tara and Jim brought little Norah over (born in November). It will be so fun to have our little neighborhood 'parents of little girls club'. See the picture below...

Week 20 - Half Way!

Oh my goodness - half way?! It both seems like the time has flown by and crawled by at the same time. But the scariest part is that in approximately 140 days Rick and I will be parents, responsible for another life. Crazy!

New with the baby:
BabyGirl weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now and is about 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to toe. According to BabyCenter.com that's about the size of a banana. Interesting fact: for the first 20 weeks measurements are taken from the top of her head to her bottom. After 20 weeks, she's measured from head to toe.

New with me:
Well last week I kept waking up in the middle of the night because of some crazy dreams I was having. I can't remember all the details - tornados, choking people, cruise ship, dinosaur bones etc - you know, the usual stuff. I would be up for an hour or two, having a hard time getting back to sleep. Annoying! It seems to have abated a bit in the last few days (knock on wood). I have also started to experience some mild indigestion. Nothing painful but annoying enough for me to pop some Tums every night. BabyGirl doesn't seem to like real spicy stuff - and now onions! I LOVE onions - boohoo.

Running & Exercise:
Thursday: BodyPump class and 20 minutes on the elliptical
Friday: Run 4 miles with Meredith and Murphy
Saturday: Because it was so cold (for Charlotte at least) - wind chill at 9 degrees, Meredith and I went to the Y and swam for 30 minutes and then did the elliptical for 20 minutes.
Sunday: Nothing
Monday: BodyPump class and 20 minutes on the elliptical (I really need to get in the pool!)
Tuesday: Run (and walk) with Murphy for 45 minutes. I was having some round ligament pain which was annoying at times to make me walk for a minute or two at a stretch. I felt this despite wearing my fancy schmancy support belt. Actually when I adjusted it a bit lower it did seem to go away and I was able to finish my run and not be late to work!
Wednesday: Ran 4 miles with April, Chief and Murphy. This run went MUCH better. No pain! What was the difference this time? I did put the belt on lower like at the end of my run yesterday. Perhaps that's it?

Big moments this week:
Started my school semester on Monday. I am taking an online English writing class, a Monday/Wednesday night Marketing class, two Graphic Design classes which will take place ALL day on Fridays, and then I am working at an internship 12 hours a week for school credit. Busy busy. Though I just happily found out that the English class and the Marketing class are both just half semester classes! I will be done with those at the beginning of March. Woohoo! The semester will be over at the beginning of May. My goal this semester is to make it out with my 4.0 GPA and really to just make it out of the semester.

Welcome Emerson!



We are so excited to announce the birth of our new niece, Emerson Christine, born today at 11:14am. Congrats to parents - Mary and Andy, big sister - Lilly and big brother - Nathan.
We can't wait to meet the little girl in person! Its going to be so great to have the little girl cousins so close in age!

I'm no Paula...



I'm no Paula Radcliffe but I do like to run. I have been getting a lot of comments (and/or horrified expressions) when I tell people that I am running while pregnant. I love to run and the thought of going a whole nine months without running is unfathomable. While Paula Radcliffe, elite marathoner, ran throughout her pregnancy and actually ran the morning that she gave birth, I have no delusions that I will make it to 40 weeks running. I just wanted to put some information out there that will hopefully educate people a bit about running (and exercising in general) while pregnant.

Some safety precautions I do follow:

  • I drink plenty of fluids - which can cause many bathroom breaks.
  • I monitor my heart rate and/or breathlessness. I make sure to maintain a conversational pace.
  • I have cut back on my running quite a bit. Before finding out I was pregnant, I was running 5 days a week and averaging about 30-40 miles a week. I am now running 3-4 times a week averaging 14-18 miles a week. I also now take plenty of walk breaks.
  • I have a support belt that I wear on about half of my runs now...I can see the need for it to increase as the belly grows. I am hoping that it will help stay away from muscle strains and/or hernias or other scary pregnancy related maladies. Bleah.

I am sure general discomfort and/or the inconvenience of having to go to the bathroom every mile might make me stop earlier than I would like but until then BabyGirl and I are going to keep plodding along.

Weeks 18 & 19


19 week belly shot

There was no Week 18 post because it went by in a blur with all the holiday excitement and finding out that we are going to have a baby girl!

New with the baby:
As of 19 weeks BabyGirl has a brain that is growing and growing! Some research suggests that she may be able to hear my voice now. Guess I need to start reading Shakespeare and listening to Mozart for our future baby genius! She evidently weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom — about the size of a large apple!

New with me:
I'm boring which I think is GREAT! Feeling pretty darn good. There have been some feelings of light headedness but I just make sure to have a snack to help bring that blood pressure back into where it should be. The belly is getting bigger...less of my pants fit. I am on a quest to find some maternity jeans that fit. I went and bought some Motherhood Maternity jeans with the waistline that pulls right over the belly...they felt great in the store but then when I wore them around the house for an hour the next day they kept slipping down! Annoying! I am also going to need some work pants soon. Buying maternity pants is not my idea of fun. Oh and at my doctor's appointment they said that I gained 3lbs since the last visit two weeks earlier! That's ahead of their 1lb a week recommendation - whoops! Let's blame it on the holidays.

Runing & Exercise Week 18 12/24-12/30:

Thursday: Run with Murphy 4 miles
Friday: Nuttin - its Xmas!
Saturday: Not feeling so great, another nuttin day
Sunday: Run 6 miles with Murphy - went well!
Monday: BodyPump class and 20 min on the elliptical...then tried Prenatal Yoga for the first time. I liked it - very relaxed. It was good to go to something just for preggos.
Tuesday: Run 4 miles with April and Meredith
Wednesday: Hmmm can't remember - run?

Running & Exercise Week 19 12/31-1/5:

Thursday: BodyPump class and 20 min on the elliptical
Friday: Nuttin - lazy New Year's Day
Saturday: Run 6 miles with Meredith and Murph -- ooh and painted BabyGirl's room!
Sunday: Nuttin (are you all impressed with my ability to do nuttin' so often! :)
Monday: Swim 30 minutes (pool is open again at the Y!) and BodyPump class. That evening went to Prenatal Yoga again.
Tuesday: Run 4 chilly miles (21 degrees!) with Murph and Meredith

Hello Twenty-Ten!

I don't believe I made any 2009 New Years Resolutions. I guess I wanted to compete in a couple of triathlons - DONE, and get pregnant - DONE, run a marathon - not quite and make it through a school year alive - DONE but barely.

I thought I would take this chance to put down some resolutions for this big momentous year. We'll see how they pan out!

A to do list for Twenty-Ten:
+ Organize my design area
+ Decorate a nursery
+ Get rid of a lot more stuff
+ Go to church more regularly - and remember those collection envelopes so I can PROVE that I went!
+ Go hiking in the NC mountains (or closer by – anywhere!)
+ Finish my Graphic Design degree
+ Take a BabyMoon
+ Have a baby
+ Make it through the first six months of parenting without making any major mistakes that would permanently scar our daughter for life
+ Get a job
+ Do a triathlon in the fall
+ Try for a half marathon by the end of the year
+ Celebrate 4 years married
+ Grow a year older (and wiser)
+ Design more invitations
+ And more...

Wish me luck! Some of these are going to happen whether I like it or not! School and my internship at Tribble Creative Group start next Monday, January 11th. Its going to be a busy semester! But I will be done in May which will free me up to do some other things...oh like have a baby.

Happy New Year!

We went over to a friends house on New Year's Eve for a casual night of food, friends and fun. Great times. I also got the privelege of being the designated driver for 8 friends...it was a very funny trip home. I sure don't miss the mornings after anymore! What will 2010 bring to us? Hopefully a lot of happy days. I have a couple of big things coming up...finishing school in May and becoming a mother in June. Wow. Its going to be a great year.
